How to get the most out of local graphs

˝The local graph is much more useful than the graph of your entire vault, especially as it gets larger. You can access it via the Command Palette: "Graph view: Open local graph"
And it is especially useful if you've set it to use specific colors for specific folders, tags, and/or key words. But there is currently no way to have that those settings persist.

This is a test

Here's the workaround!

  1. Open the full graph for the vault, and modify the settings to get it just the way you want it.
  2. Bookmark the graph – that will create a saved bookmarks for your vault graph, with all those settings, using "Bookmark the active tab"
    1. Bookmarks - Obsidian Help
  3. Now install and enable Community plugin "Sync Graph Settings"
    1. Adjust the settings if you like – these affect the connection between the note from which the local graph is generated, so they are not relevant for the full vault graph. My preferences:
      - Auto Sync: toggled on (these automatically sets the local graph to match the full vault graph; you can also turn this off, and then just issue the command "Sync Graph Settings: Sync Graph Settings to Local Graph" to apply the full graph's settings to the local graph.
      • Default depth: 1 (default)
      • Default Incoming Links: toggled on
      • Default Outgoing Links: toggled on
      • Default Neighbor Links: toggled on
  4. Now your local graphs will have all the same colorful organization as your full graph. If it doesn't work, go to the bookmark you created for the full graph.
  5. You can also set up bookmarks for multiple graph settings. Now your local graphs will reflect that. For example, you might want to have a bookmark to save a version of you graph that filters out notes from a particular folder. Or, a graph that includes only files with a specific tag or property.

I've also put this in a post this to the Obsidian Forum (based on a thread going back to my original complaint in January 2021!)
